The following narrative is largely known among all peasant communities : god Malhārī, resident of Jejuri, in Pune district, is marrried to Mhāḷsā, from a Vāṇī community. He happens to fall in love with Bāṇāī, a woman from a Dhanagar shepherd community. To conquer her, he becomes a servant in the Bāṇāī’s community.

Notes =>Vṛṅdāvan : small structure erected in the courtyard, in front of the house or at its back, in which basil is planted. Womenfolk, every day, worship it, pouring water and walking around the structure. At twilight, an oil lamp is lit and kept in a niche in the structure.
